"Harry could actually taste the music in his mouth, rolling over his tongue. He swallowed it, gulped it down, and drew it into his lungs - yeah!" - from the book "Mind Crash"

Urban Disturbance
(Genre: Experimental Punk/Metal/Industrial/Electronic) - 1984 to 1993...
1986 (1984) - "Mysteriously Acquired Polish Army Uniform" - 11 tracks, 45mins:
1. Data Control 2. Security Forces 3. Good Kill Ratio 4. Cut To Funk 5. Untitled 6. Resonate 7. Moorish Gypsy 8. Excessive Force 9. Shadow Of Death 10. Resonate II 11. Resonate III
This release was an experiment in sound texture, featuring plenty of feedback and spoken word loops. Heavily influenced by The Swans, Psychic TV, The Hafler Trio and Flipper. The title was taken from a picture caption in a music press interview with Throbbing Gristle.
1987 (1985) - "Music is Dead" - 9 tracks, 60mins:
1. The Graceful Fish 2. Crush Green Thoughts 3. The Psychic Generator 4. Music Is Dead 5. The Day My Arm Fell Off 6. The Kennedy Assassination In Feedback 7. Aftermath 8. Repetition 9. Switch Off
"A tape of samples, cut-ups, out-takes, riddims and some distressingly serious attempts at sound sensibility.
On this evidence music isn’t dead at all, but merely residing, bored and temporarily, in Basildon, a living death. " - House of Dolls Magazine, 1985
1988 - "Burn Down Fear City" - 10 tracks, 45mins:
1. Fire And Steel 2. Television Is Reality 3. Initiation 4. Loop 5. Shellshock 6. Nothing At All 7. New Flesh 8. Marauding Youth 9. SinDrome 10. Rejoice
In the same vein as the previous two releases, the tracks were more structured in nature. The title was from a cut-up newspaper article regarding the Toxteth riots, sound footage of which was used in "Marauding Youth".
1988 - "Distractions Vol. II" - 7 tracks, 45mins:
1. Down 2. Extracts From The Feedback Opera 3. Love And Terror 4. We Need More Power 5. Summer Of Love 6. Time Moves Sideways 7. Winter of Hate
The first four tracks picked up where the previous albums left off, though this time the fusion of guitars and electronics was more defined. "Love and Terror" betrayed an interest in Thrash Metal (Napalm Death). "We Need More Power" featured an interview with a guy talking about his frightening dabblings with a ouija board during a power outage. "Summer of Love" was a forwards version of "Winter of Hate" (or was it the other way round?) and was a very Husler Du influenced psychedelic punk track.
1989 - "The Dark Mother Filled With Light" - 1 track, 15mins:
Single track extracted from a continuous tape loop of "trance-induction" vocal chants
What can I say, it all got a little bit weird around this point in time!

1989 - "The Sword Is My Shepherd" - 13 tracks, 45mins:
1. Invocation/Chant 2. Live Now, Die Later 3. Mur-Uh 4. JustIce 5. SubMerge 6. Secret 7. Speedway '69 8. H.O.D. 9. Smeared Out 10. Speedway '89 11. The Dodgy Track 12. Fast 13. Scraps
Power electronics, dance beats and distorted guitars continue to merge in new ways, along with soundbites of Native American chants, tribal drumming and Hell's Angels running amok.
1991 - "Destructure: The last foul breath of the ego " - 21 tracks, 60mins:
1. Endless Drive 2. Feel So Good 3. Violent Motorcycle Death 4. Untitled 5. Nothing Two Live Four 6. Slave Acid Bitch 7. DemonKiller 8. I Hate Music 9. Eight Zero Eight 10. Move It 11. Neanderthal Hip Hop 12. The Predator 13. Bassment 14. Just Ice 15. Project Bluebird 16. Untitled 17. Untitled 18. No More Sympathy 19. Untitled 20. New Time Zone 21. Spud
The use of "Untitled" works originated, I believe, with the "Avant Garde" art movement. However, in this case, laziness, not trendiness, resulted in a number of tracks being labelled "Untitled".
1992 - "Is it egotistical to invent clever names for demo tapes?" - 9 tracks, 45mins:
1. 20 Storeys High 2. ImagineNation 3. Love I Feel 4. Will+Imagination=Reality 5. Reactivate 6. Salvation 7. Fire Dance 8. The Centre Of The Sun 9. The End Of Infinity
Full-on house tracks began to appear on this album, along with tales of bad acid trips and Terrence McKenna soundbites. The two final improvised jazz tracks surprised me as much as everyone else.
1993 - "Christmas Cake Circus" - 1 track, 45mins
The final release from Urban Disturbance confirmed that electronics were the way forward, featured a single, seamless electronic track, blending the usual synths, samplers and squelchy Roland thingy's with vocal tape loops.
Urban Disturbance tracks featured on a variety of compilations including:
- Various tracks from "Music Is Dead" on a compilation for Italian fanzine "Yeah"
- "The Graceful Fish" from "Music Is Dead " on a compilation for Scottish Magick publication "Waratah Blossoms"
- "Initiation" from "Burn Down Fear City" on a compilation for Italian fanzine "Dopo"
All the above Urban Disturbance releases, originally available on cassette tape and by mail-order only, have long since been deleted. However, a free Urban Disturbance compilation CD titled "Regression (Session) 8693" can be obtained in exchange for a piece of your own work (music, art, film, book, magazine, etc.). Alternatively, download extractmost of it for free below. This is made available for historical purposes only (i.e. sound quality is not great). “Live Now, Die Later” You seem to live your life in self-doubt You’re afraid of yourself Afraid of what you might do You’re afraid of what you might not do
Seize control of your life Do what you’ve always wanted to do What you’ve always dreamed about
Take your desires for reality Because yesterday’s gone, tomorrow don’t exist Live now, die later
"Winter of Hate" "And the sun shines so hard in the early morn. Radiating heat onto dunes of golden sand.
Fields of corn sway to and fro' in the warm air. The truth becomes as clear as fresh spring water.
The Earth spins in a black corner of the galaxy. And the stars shine brightly through the dark.
Like lasers beamed through rocket fuel. They shine so hard, they shine so hard.
Silk clouds drift across a blue sky. A riot of colour and sound erupts like a thousand volcanoes. Showering molten love across the globe."
